In 1998, the
3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) was established with the unique aim of creating the technical specifications for a 3rd generation mobile system. By pooling together the resources of 7 regional standardisation organisations (including the
ETSI in Europe), the initiative has become integral to preconfiguring and designing the new generations of mobile networks. Here is an inside look into this global standards organisation, its activities and working methods, etc., with input and expertise from Lionel Morand, Chair of the Core Network and Terminals Group, one of the three main technical bodies for the 3GPP.
