Extend the life of IoT devices thanks to smartphones

Connected objects are increasingly part of our lives and it is now possible to make almost any item that was previously silent, communicative: an electric meter, a fridge, a bike, a watch etc. Given the high number of objects that can be connected, we need the devices that give them a voice to be inexpensive and uncomplicated. And, as these devices often need a long battery life, they should be energy efficient too. These restrictions will impact on the network and its performance. So, what if our phones could act as relays for these connected objects, optimising their energy consumption and even extending network coverage?
