Reducing mobile network power consumption with AI

In the countries where it operates, Orange is deploying an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm designed to reduce the mobile network power consumption despite the increased traffic.

"This algorithm has reduced Orange’s mobile network consumption in Poland by 4% in one year."

Taoufik En Najjari, senior data scientist at Orange, explains: “For ten years, we have modernized our networks to make them more efficient and less energy-intensive. Our studies show that AI could reduce our power consumption by 15%.”
Orange research teams have created an algorithm using machine learning and big data technologies to scan the network and analyze technical data from base stations. It then proposes a reconfiguration of the devices detected as being the least efficient by copying the settings of the most optimized ones.
This algorithm, which is activated only twice a year for 15 minutes, has reduced Orange’s mobile network consumption in Poland by 4% in one year.
