Counting our steps: what do we get out of it?

Of all the digital tools that can be used to track our physical condition and activities, step counters – or pedometers – are the most prominent. Integrated by default in most smart watches and wristbands, they are also among the native applications on many smartphones. The SENSE department has studied the adoption of these tools in order to determine users’ motivations, their step-counting practices and their feelings about the personal data generated. Beyond the sole use of pedometers, these adoption behaviors shed light on the relationship of individuals to health and wellness data gathered from connected objects.
